Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a perennial herb belonging to the mint family, widely recognised for its captivating effects on felines. The plant contains a volatile oil called nepetalactone, which, when sniffed by susceptible cats (approximately two-thirds of the population), can induce playful, euphoric, and sometimes hyperactive behaviours, mimicking their natural pheromones. For humans, catnip has traditionally been used in herbal teas for its mild sedative properties, helping with relaxation, stress relief, and occasionally aiding sleep. It's also been historically applied as a folk remedy for digestive issues like stomach cramps and indigestion, and as an insect repellent due to its active compounds.
