Turnips 'Early Purple' (Brassica rapa) are a fast-maturing variety producing small to medium-sized roots with smooth white flesh and a vibrant purple top that emerges above the soil. Grown in South Africa, they offer a mild, slightly sweet, and peppery flavour, especially when harvested young. Both the roots and the nutritious green leaves are edible. The roots are excellent roasted, boiled, mashed, or pickled, while the greens can be sautéed or added to soups.
